For the creation of the album cover for LOBOTOMIA POP by artist VSP AST, I began by researching the album’s tracklist and the artist’s visual identity, using these elements as the foundation for developing the visual concept.
Through optical illusion, I aimed to represent the loss and fragmentation of identity, establishing a contrast between two distinct moments in the artist’s reality: before and after the lobotomy. The lower half of the composition represents the artist as an individual, associated with a defined sense of identity. In contrast, the upper half depicts the moment of rupture, in which this identity is progressively dissolved. The Asian hornets emerging from the smoke serve as a visual representation of this transformation, suggesting the invasion and subsequent loss of the self.
The artwork was created using soft pastels on high-quality, heavyweight watercolour paper. The choice of medium and surface allowed me to preserve areas of exposed paper, exploring the contrast between materiality and emptiness while reinforcing an aesthetic inspired by Pop Art. This approach establishes a connection between the visual language of the genre and the album’s underlying concept of fragmented identity.
